Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a treatment method for mental health issues, emotional challenges, and psychiatric disorders. It involves talking with a trained therapist to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and underlying issues, with the goal of improving well-being and functioning.
Key points about psychotherapy:
Purpose: Helps people cope with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, or life transitions.
Types:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – focuses on changing negative thought patterns.
Psychodynamic Therapy – explores unconscious processes and past experiences.
Strengths-Based Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on a person’s inherent strengths, resources, and resilience rather than their problems or deficits. The idea is that by building on what already works well in a person’s life, they can overcome challenges and improve well-being more effectively.
Self Psychology is a psychoanalytic theory developed by Heinz Kohut in the 1970s. It focuses on the development of the self and how early relationships—especially with caregivers—shape a person's sense of identity, self-worth, and emotional stability.
